The Italian opera included the Hebrews’ chorus ''Va’, pensiero, sull’ali dorate'' (“Fly, thought, on golden wings”), which became a patriotic song of the Italian Risorgimento. As a nation fighting for independence from foreign rule, the Italians identified themselves with the oppressed Jews in Babylon.
