Born and educated in [[Arezzo, Italy]], he joined the Franciscan order in 1637. While he was in Volterra his interests turned more toward secular music. He lived many years in Austria (at Innsbruck and Vienna) as one of the court composers. He authored several operas on classical subjects, including ''Il Tito'', which deals with he love story between [[Titus]] and [[Berenice]]. Cesti died in Venice in 1669
