Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968) was a Jewish Italian American composer. Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco was born and lived in Florence, Italy, where he began a successful career as a classical composer. In 1939 he and his family fled to the United States to avoid racial persecution. They settled at Beverly Hills, California, where the composer was engaged to write film scores at the MGM Studies. In 1946 Castelnuovo-Tedesco became an American citizen, but often visited his native Florence during the summers after the war. In addition to classical music, Castelnuovo-Tedesco composed a large amount of Jewish music, both secular and liturgical. The composer died in Beverly Hills, CA, on March 17, 1968.
