Doctorate of Divinity from Maynooth College, Ireland, 1959.  Post-doctoral research at the Pontifical Biblical Institute, Rome (1959-1961) and at the École Biblique, Jerusalem (1965-1967). Was an ordained Catholic priest, order of the Servites (1957-1969). Taught at DePaul University, Chicago, since 1969, Professor Emeritus since 1995.
