On February 1, 1492 some workmen claimed an amazing discovery at the Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem in Rome [Italy]. Behind a mosaic that was being repaired they found in a sealed lead coffer built into a wall of the basilica the relic of the Titulus Crucis. Apparently the relic was sealed sometime before 1145 as it bears the seal of a cardinal who became Pope in 1144, and subsequently forgotten. The tradition traces the origins of the relic back to the many relics brought to Italy by Helena, the mother of the Emperor Constantine. However, the radiocarbon analysis conducted in 2002 by the University of Arizona concluded that the artifact was made between 980 and 1146 CE. | |||

The Titulus Crucis is the sign that, according to the Gospel narratives, Pontius Pilate placed on Jesus' Cross.
Overview
