Herod (1900) is a play by Stephen Phillips.
Abstract
A phenomenal success in its time, to which the incidental music by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor contributed no little. The romantic love of Herod and Mariamne was placed in an orientally luxuriant setting.
Editions, performances
Published in England (London: Lane, 1900). Premiered at Her Majesty's Theatre in London, England, on 31 October 1900 (with Herbert Beerbohm as Herod, and Maud Jeffries as Mariamne). A revised version was then performed at the Lyric Theatre in New York City, on 26 October 1909 (with William Faversham as Herod, and Julie Opp as Mariamne).
