The Protoevangelium of James / Infancy Gospel of James (see [ Online Text]) is a 2nd century Christian writing, now in collections of NT Apocrypha.

Overview

The document presents itself as written by James, the brother of Jesus: "I, James, wrote this history in Jerusalem." Scholars rather see it a 2nd-century Christian document. By harmonizing the Infancy narratives of Matthew and Luke and adding new details, the Protoevangelium of James provides the version of the Nativity of Jesus that would become normative in Christian tradition. The Protoevangelium of James also offers an original narrative on the Nativity and Childhood of Mary of Nazareth, including information about her parents, Joachim and Anne.
