José Antonio Pagola (b. 1937) is a Spanish catholic priest and scholar.

Biography

Born in Añorga, Gipúzcoa (Spain) in 1937. Studied at the Gregorian Univesity and the Pontificial Biblical Institute in Rome and at the École Biblique et Archéologique Française de Jérusalem. He has been professor of Christology in the Faculty of Theology of Northern Spain in Vitoria (Spain) and in the San Sebastián Seminary (Spain). In 2007, the Spanish Episcopal Commision for the Doctrine of Faith published an official note questioning the results of the application of the historical-critical methodod by Pagola in his book Jesús: Aproximación histórica (2007) and his non-canonical reading of the Scriptures; such note rapidly caused a strong debate among the learned circles of the Spanish catholic community echoed also in the Spanish media.
