Overview The Japanese people are the citizens of Japan as well as the predominant ethnic group of the country (circa 130 million). They primarily speak the Japanese language. Most Japanese (circa 127 million) today live within the borders of independent Japan. There are Japanese minorities in nearby China and the Philippines, and sizeable populations of immigrants and their descendants in Brazil, the United States, and other countries.
