Penitent Magdalene refers to an event in the life of Mary Magdalene, following the death of Jesus of Nazareth, as narrated in later Christian traditions.

Overview

In the Western church, Mary Magdalene was identified with the unnamed "sinful woman" of Luke 7:36-50 and celebrated as a sinner, who spent the rest of her life in penitence. The subject became more and more secular in form and content.

Penitent Magdalene, in the arts

In Christian iconography, the scene was often depicted, assuming gradually a more profane character.
