Penitent Magdalene refers to an event in the life of Mary Magdalene, following the death of Jesus of Nazareth, as narrated in later Christian traditions.
Overview
In the Western church, Mary Magdalene was identified with the unnamed "sinful woman" of Luke 7:36-50 and celebrated as a penitent sinner.
Penitent Magdalene, in the arts
In Christian iconography, the scene was often depicted, assuming gradually a more profane character.
