The Schurer project, the revision of Emil Schurer’s classic Geschichte des judischen Volkes im Zeitalter Jesu Christi, first published in 1874 but revised and enlarged in 1901-1909 (3rd/4th editions), began in 1964 when Matthew Black commissioned the translation of Schurer’s German text into English. The project continued with the work of Geza Vermes and Fergus Millar, who substantially revised Schurer’s work.
