This painting is one of Baburen's rare nocturnal scenes, inspired, in part, by <A onclick="return OpenOther('/html/c/caravagg/03/191captu.html')" HREF="/html/c/caravagg/03/191captu.html">Caravaggio's Taking of Christ.</A> Unlike his Utrecht compatriot Gerrit van Honthorst, who specialised in nocturnal scenes with artificial illumination, Baburen, like Caravaggio, preferred strong patterns of natural daylight.
