Conjectures sur les mémoires originaux dont il paroit que Moyse s'est servi pour composer le livre de la Genèse <French> / Conjectures on the Original Memoirs which Moses Apparently Used to Compose the Book of Genesis (1753) is a book by Jean Astruc.
Abstract
Astruc's goal was to defend the Mosaic authenticity of the Book of Genesis in spite of the inconsistencies and contradictions noticed by authors such as Thomas Hobbes and Baruch Spinoza . Astruc identified four documents (or Memoirs) in Genesis which he claimed Moses wrote and were then combined into a single work by a later editor. Astruc was the first to argue what would become known as the Documentary Hypothesis.
