L'ebrea <Italia> / The Jewess (1844) is an opera by Giovanni Pacini (mus.) and Giacomo Sacchero (libr.). After Scribe.
Abstract
"Dramma lirico in quattro atti."
"La scena e' in Antiochia, al secolo I, sotto l'impero di Vespasiano."
The story is based on the famous drama (La Juive) by Eugène Scribe, set to music in France by Jacques Fromental Halévy in 1835. To avoid censure and the charge of anti-clericalism, the story is transferred back from the times of Catholic Inquisition to Roman times. Only in 1865, the "original" version by Halévy would premiere in Italy at Teatro alla Scala of Milan and the Pacini version would soon be forgotten.
