Born on September 30, 1909 in New York City, attended Fordham University receiving his B.A. in 1929, St. Joseph's Seminary where he was ordained on September 23, 1933. He received a doctorate from the Catholic University's Department of Semitic and Egyptian Languages and Literatures where he also taught Hebrew, Aramaic, and Syriac from 1938 - 1980. Between 1947 and 1956 he was a visiting lecturer and professor at Johns Hopkins University. In 1953, Skehan and a team of seven international scholars were assembled to work on the Dead Sea Scrolls. He was made Emeritus when he retired in August of 1980.
