"Imaginemos a un grupo de discípulos alrededor del fuego, mientras su maestro está orando. ¿De qué hablan? Evidentemente, de los hechos y dichos que le han visto realizar y proclamar. Esta imagen contiene los elementos que, según Dunn, la investigación sobre el Jesús histórico ha olvidado. En primer lugar, Jesús causó como maestro tan honda impresión en sus discípulos que la decisión de seguirle fue ya una respuesta de fe bastante anterior a su muerte y resurrección. En segundo lugar, el primer eslabón en la cadena de la tradición de Jesús es la tradición oral con sus peculiaridades; por tanto, cada representación es distinta y adaptada a la audiencia, es comunitaria, integra varios testigos y versiones.
