==Abstract==

The novel contains an elaborated  description of Moreau's painting of [[Salome]]. It was an important step in the transformation of [[Salome]] into the ''femme fatale'' of Wilde and Strauss. Salome is described as "the symbolic incarnation of undying Lust, the Goddess  of immortal  Hysteria ... an accursed Beauty ... a monstrous Beast."
