'''Thomas Browne''' (1605-1682) was an English scholar and author of works on medicine, religion and magic. In his catalogue of rare books (''Musaeum Clausum'') written around 1675, he included the "Book of Enoch" acquired by [[Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc]] in 1636, of which he had heard from Peiresc's biography by [[Pierre Gassendi]], translated by [[William Rand]] in 1657. In 1681 [[Hiob Ludolf]] proved that Peiresc's manuscript was not a copy of the lost book of Enoch, but a theological treatise containing only citations of and allusions to the prophecies of Enoch.
