Thomas Browne (1605-1682) was an English scholar and author of works on medicine, religion and magic. In his catalogue of rare books (Musaeum Clausum) written around 1675, he included the "Book of Enoch" acquired by Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc in 1636, of which he had heard from Peiresc's biography by Pierre Gassendi, translated by William Rand in 1657. In 1681 Hiob Ludolf proved that Peiresc's manuscript was not a copy of the lost book of Enoch, but a theological treatise containing only citations of and allusions to the prophecies of Enoch.
