Zadok was, according to Jewish tradition, a chief priest serving in the Temple of Jerusalem at the time of King David and Solomon. The Sons of Zadok, High Priests of the Second Temple, claimed descent from him and made him a descendant from Aaron's grandson Phinehas.

Overview

In the book of Samuel, Zadok son of Ahitub is mentioned in a list of officers under King David:

15 So David reigned over all Israel; and David administered justice and equity to all his people. 16 Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was recorder; 17 Zadok son of Ahitub and Ahimelech son of Abiathar were priests; Seraiah was secretary; 18 Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David’s sons were priests. (2 Sam 8:15-18).

According to the book of Kings, Zadok officiated at the anointing ceremony of Solomon as king:

38 So the priest Zadok, the prophet Nathan, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, went down and had Solomon ride on King David’s mule, and led him to Gihon. 39 There the priest Zadok took the horn of oil from the tent and anointed Solomon. Then they blew the trumpet, and all the people said, “Long live King Solomon!” (1 King 1:38-39).

Ant VII 2,2 -- Out of the tribe of Levi came four thousand and seven hundred, having Jehoiada for their leader. After these came Zadok the high priest, with twenty-two captains of his kindred.

Ant VII 5,4 -- He (=David) also appointed Zadok, of the family of Phinehas, to be high priest, together with Abiathar, for he was his friend.

Ant VII 9,2 -- He (=David) persuaded Abiathar and Zadok, the high priests, who had determined to go away with him, as also all the Levites, who were with the ark, to stay behind, as hoping that God would deliver him without its removal; but he charged them to let him know privately how all things went on; and he had their sons, Ahimmaz the son of Zadok, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar, for faithful ministers in all things;
