Walter Strauss was born in 1925 in Duisburg, Germany. Having experienced Nazi persecution of Jews, in 1938 he went as a refugee to Belgium and from there in 1940 to France where he was hosted at Seyre and at the Chateau de La Hille.

In January 1943 he was arrested after a failed attempt at crossing the border with Switzerland, but managed to return to the Villa. Arrested by the French Police in 1943, he was sent to Gurs and then deported to Auschwitz where he perished.
