Theodor Herzl Gaster (1906-1992) was a British-born American Jewish scholar.
Biography
Born in England, the son of folklorist and rabbi Moses Gaster. After studying at the University of London, in the 1940s began his doctoral studies at Columbia University in New York. In his career taught in several institutions, including Dropsie College, New York University, the University of Leeds, Barnard College, and the University of Florida.
Works on Second Temple Judaism
His translation of the Dead Sea Scrolls - one of the first to be published in the 1950s - was widely celebrated and had two successful updates in the 1960s and 1970s.
