The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs and Related Literature is a graduate course offered by Gabriele Boccaccini at the University of Michigan in the Winter 2013.

Overview

The course will focus on Second Temple Jewish traditions related to the figure of the Twelve Patriarchs and their forefather Abraham, with particular attention to their contribution to the teachings of Jesus and the development of the early Christian movement. On one hand, the patriarchs provided living examples of moral principles; on the other, they came to be understood as revealers of apocalyptic and messianic expectations.

The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs will be examined as a Second Temple text. Its literary growth testifies to the development and transformation of Essene ideas into the early Christian movement.

Each meeting will focus on one Patriarch, showing how his figure was understood in the Bible and creatively reinterpreted by the diversity of Second Temple Jewish groups (including the early Jesus movement), with special attention to Philo, Josephus, and the Targums.
