Abstract

As might be expected from an edited volume on systematic theology, Oliver Crisp's contribution on the "Incarnation" focuses more on the later theological implications of this doctrine rather than its historical origins. Accordingly, much of his chapter circles around the orthodox account of this doctrine, which moves forward from the Council of Chalcedon in 451 CE. That being said, a few more historically oriented observations are in order. Crisp, not surprisingly, assumes that the incarnation resonates throughout the New Testament in several passages such as Rom. 1:3-4, Gal 4:4-5, Phil. 2:5-8, Col 2:9, 1 Tim 2:5, 3:16, and Heb 2:14, but is "most dramatically heralded in the Prologue to the Fourth Gospel" (160). Moreover, he also addresses a related issue, namely, whether a virginal birth was necessary for the incarnation and concludes that it was not. In the end, Crisp's underlying point is to insist, contra Hicks and in line with much of Christian theology, that Christ needed to be both fully God and fully human in order to affect salvation for fallen humanity. ~Deborah Forger
