St. Matthew and the Angel (1602) is a (lost) painting by Caravaggio; see Lost Artworks.
This was the original version of the Inspiration of St. Matthew painted by Caravaggio but rejected. Once the painting was replaced by the current version, the rejected painting was purchased by Vincenzo Giustiniani for his private collection and eventually ended at the Kaiser Friedrich Museum, Berlin, Germany, where it was destroyed in 1945 in the last days of World War II.
