Abstract
In this series of lectures given at Edwards Settlement and Manchester College, Oxford in honor of Benjamin Jowett, Montefiore gives his introduction to the historical Jesus as can best be excised from the Synoptic Gospels. Jesus, a Jewish prophet like Amos and Ezekiel before him, is seen in a highly favorable light, but he is not beyond reproach. Montefiore’s greatest strength is in his critical viewpoint as an outsider, but not an antagonistic outsider. His attempt to rise above the too common animosity, where Jews were too quick to dismiss the originality of Jesus while the Christians were too quick to exalt it, is largely successful in his placing much of Jesus’ teaching well within the popular Judaism of his day while acknowledging the significant points of departure, often with the result that both the rabbis and Jesus were correct. Not surprising from a self-proclaimed universalist modern Jew who prefers to think of Jesus as “a Unitarian above all men.” A much appreciated viewpoint in the history of historical Jesus scholarship at the beginning of the 20th century. -- Jason Zurawski, University of Michigan
