Salvatore Minocchi (1869-1943) was an Italian scholar.

Biography

Salvatore Minocchi was born on August 26, 1869 at Raggiolo (near Arezzo), Italy.

He graduated from the Pontifical Gregorian University in 1891 and was appointed a Catholic priest in 1892 in Florence. He devoted himself to biblical studies and learned Hebrew, Syriac, and Arabic at the Istituto di Studi Superiori of Florence, under the guidance of David Castelli. In 1896-99 he launched the Rivista Bibliografica Italiana, followed by the experience of Studi religiosi (1901-07). Minocchi, now professor of Hebrew at the University of Florence (1901-09), became one of the leaders of the Modernist movement in Italy. The contrast with the conservative teachings of the Catholic Church led him to leave the priesthood in 1908. Minocchi continued his studies as professor of Hebrew (1909-21) and then professor of religions (1925-37) at the University of Pisa. From 1938 to 1940 he was professor of Hebrew at the University of Florence.

Minocchi died on August 13, 1942 during a period of vacation at Travale di Montieri (near Grosseto), Italy.
