Pietro Martire Vermigli (1499-1562) was an Italian scholar and theologian. Pietro Martire Vermigli was born in Florence [Italy] on September 8, 1499. He entered the Augustinian Order and learned Greek and Hebrew. He was a preacher and prior in the monasteries of Spoleto and Lucca (where Girolamo Zanchi also was deeply influenced by his teachings). In 1542 Vermigli, together with Bernardino Ochino, was among the first Italian reformers who had to flee in order to escape the Inquisition. Vermigli went to Switzerland and from there to Strasbourg, where he was professor of Theology at the local University. In 1547 Vermigli and Ochino were invited to England. In 1548 Vermigli was appointed the Regius Professor of Divinity at the University of Oxford. Back to Strasbourg, Vermigli in 1556 accepted the invitation to teach at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, where he remained until his death on November 12, 1562.
