Pietro Della Valle (1586-1652) was an Italian scholar, composer and playwright. From 1614 to 1626 traveled extensively in the Near East and brought back a copy of the Samaritan Pentateuch. Its 6,000 variants from the Masoretic text posed new questions of Biblical philology. He also composed some of the earliest forms of oratorio.
