Pentagruel (1532) and Gangantua (1534) are the first two parts in a series of five novels written on La vie de Gargantua et de Pantagruel by François Rabelais, between 1532 and 1564. They were followed by Le Tiers Livre de Pantagruel / The Third Book of Pantagruel (1546), Le Quart Livre de Pantagruel / The Fourth Book of Pantagruel (1552), and Le Cinquième Livre de Pantagruel / The Fifth Book of Pantagruel (1564).

Abstract

The first novel introduced Pentagruel and Gargantua as descendants of the Giants. At the beginning of the second novel readers are told how the Giants survived the Flood as one of them, Hurtali, straddled the ark as a child his rocking horse.
