Paul and Qumran: Studies in New Testament Exegesis (1968) is a volume edited by Jerome Murphy-O'Connor.

Abstract

In a field embroiled in controversy and shrouded in scandal, Murphy-O’Connor seeks, through this edited volume of essays, to bring to light points of contact between the “Essene Documents” and the “Pauline Epistles.” He arranges the essays logically, beginning with an essay that provides principles that can help to guide the work of comparative studies between Qumran and the NT and then proceeds with three essays that illumine connections between Qumran and Corinth. The subsequent five essays address either specific themes such as ‘justification by faith,’ ‘mystery,’ and ‘truth’ or connections between Qumran and the gospel of the Ephesians. A recurrent theme, which runs throughout the essays, is that Pauline Corpus exhibits traces of Essene influence, and yet, most of the authors still strive to highlight the uniqueness of Christianity. An important work, both for its impact on New Testament studies and for the way it brought into the public domain the ongoing scholarly work on the DSS. – Deborah Forger, University of Michigan
