Orlando furioso / The Frenzy of Orlando (1516) is a poem by Ludovico Ariosto.

Abstract

In Canto 34:59 of the poem, Enoch and Elijah are mentioned as the ones that the apostle John met there when he also was taken into the Heavenly Garden of Eden, where they are destined to stay until the second coming of Christ.

  • Quivi [Giovanni] fu assunto, e trovò compagnia,
    • che prima Enoch, il patriarca, v'era;
    • eravi insieme il gran profeta Elia,
    • che non han vista ancor l'ultima sera;
    • e fuor de l'aria pestilente e ria
    • si goderan l'eterna primavera,
    • fin che dian segno l'angeliche tube,
    • che torni Cristo in su la bianca nube.
  • Translated thither, he [John] found company,
    • The patriarch Enoch, and the mighty seer
    • Elias; nor as yet those sainted three
    • Have seen corruption, but in garden, clear
    • Of earth's foul air, will joy eternity
    • Of spring, till they angelic trumpets hear,
    • Sounding through heaven and earth, proclaim aloud
    • Christ's second advent on the silvery cloud.
