Onofrio Panvinio / Onuphrius Panvinius (1530-1568) was an Italian scholar, one of the greatest Roman and Church historians and archaeologists of his time and the father of Christian Archaeology.

Biography

Onofrio Panvinio was born February 23, 1530 at Verona [Italy]. At eleven he entered the Augustinian Order. He graduated in Rome as bachelor of arts in 1553, and in 1557 he earned the degree of doctor of theology. Since 1556 he held the office of corrector and reviser of the books of the Vatican Library. He visited various libraries in Italy, making historical researches, and went to Germany in 1559. He was recognized as one of the greatest Roman and Church historians and archaeologists of his time and the father of Christian Archaeology. He died at Palermo [Italy] on April 7, 1568.
