Oberammergau Passion Play

Overview

In 1633, after the Black Death hit Oberammergau, the village "vowed to perform the passion Play every ten years."

The first Passion Play was performed in 1634, and again in 1644 and 1654.

In 1662 the schoolmaster completed a new script for the 4th Passion Play in 1664, which continued to be performed and revised regularly every 10 years (1674, 1680, 1690, 1700, 1710, 1720, 1730, 1740).

In 1750 (13th ed.) and 1760 (14th) the Passion Play took a more meditative approach, for` the form of living tableaux

The Play was suspended in 1770, but resumed in 1780 (15th)<,;onde . Approved by Hitler and by the Church,

Nothing changed however after the war. There was a strong opposition by the inhabitants of the city to make any change./

Some reforms started only in the 1990, based on the principles that Jesus was a Jesus and this was an inner-Jewish controversy.
