Moses Gaster (1856-1939) was a Romanian Jewish scholar, active mostly in England.

Biography

Gaster was born Sept 17, 1856 in Bucharest [Romania] into a renowned Jewish Austrian family.

After studying in his native city, he earned degrees from the University of Leipzig (1878) and the Jewish Seminary in Breslau (1881).

Gaster taught Romanian language and literature at the University of Bucharest (1881–85). In 1886 he moved to England as Professor of Slavonic literature at the University of Oxford.

Gaster gathered a large collection of ancient manuscript, which is now preserved at the University of Manchester.
