Marthe Duvivier

Marthe Duvivier (1850-1933) was a French opera singer. In 1881 she created the role of Salome in Massenet's Hérodiade. Although the character of Salome had been present in biblical oratorios since the 17th century, Duvivier was the first singer ever to feature Salome in an opera. Not only did she perform in the Brussels premiere, but reprised the role also in the American premiere of the opera in 1892 in New Orleans.
