La passione di Gesù Cristo <Italian> / The Passion of Jesus Christ (1783) is an oratorio, set to music by Giovanni Paisiello.

Abstract

"Oratorio in due parti per soli, coro e orchestra." Composed in 1782, it was first performed in 1783. Piasiello asked the old Metastasio to modify the libretto and make some additions, but the librettist declined the offer.

Performance history

Premiered in St. Petersburg [Russia]: Catholic Cathedral, March 1783. Early revivals include performances in Warsaw (1784), Catania (1794), Perugia (1800), and Rome (1824). Although rarely performed, the oratorio is easily available today thanks to two major sound recordings (1998 & 2007).
