L'Apotre Paul: esquisse d'une histoire de sa pensée <French> / The Apostle Paul: A Sketch of the Development of His Doctrine (1870) is a book by Auguste Sabatier.

Abstract

Sabatier's work was "the first important attempt to prove the existence of different phases in the thought and life of Paul... At first the Apostle held... a simple doctrine which can psychologically explained from his rabbinic training and his conversion... At the time of his great controversies he was compelled to work out for himself a philosophy of history which would enable him to prove that the law was only a passing episode in the history of salvation, and that justification by faith had always lain in the purpose of God... In the letters written during his imprisonment the Apostle advances to a speculative, gnostic development off his ideas" (Schweitzer 1912, p.32).
