Joseph Schacht (1902-1969) was a German scholar, active in Germany, England and the United States. Joseph Schacht was born in Ratibor [Poland, then Germany] on March 15, 1902. He worked at the University of Munich since 1925. From 1934 to 1939 he taught at the University of Cairo. During WW2 he lived and work in England, becoming a Professor at Oxford. After a few years at the University of Leiden, he eventually became Professor of Arabic Studies at Columbia University since 1959.
