José O'Callaghan Martínez (1922-2001), scholar
José O’Callaghan (1922-2001) was a Spanish Catholic priest and scholar. Born in Tortosa, died in Barcelona. Jesuit priest, papyrologist, and New Testament scholar. He studied at the Universities of Madrid and Milan and taught until 1971 at the Faculty of Theology of Sant Cugat del Vallés (Barcelona). In the 1960s he founded the Seminari de Papirologia [Papyrology Seminar], as well as the journal Studia Papyrologica (1962-1963) and two supplementary publication series: Papyrologica Castroctaviana (1967-1988) and Estudis de Papirologia i Filologia Biblica [Studies on Biblical Papyrology and Philology] (1991-1995). He later became professor at the Pontificial Biblical Institute (1971-1992) and dean of its Biblical Faculty (1983-1986). In the 1980s and 1990s he also taught as a visiting professor at the University of Urbino. His chief contribution to the study of Second Temple Judaism was his study of the Greek papyri from to Qumran Cave 7. His 1972 identification of several Qumranic fragments such as 7Q5 with different New Testament verses has been widely disputed by Biblical and Second Temple scholars. He also wrote extensively on textual issues concerning the Christian Scriptures.
