John Naylor (1838-1897) was a British composer. Born June 8, 1838 at Stanningley, near Leeds [England]. A pupil of Robert Senior Burton, became organist at Scarborough in 1856 and at York Minster in 1883. In 1895 was elected an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Music. Was the father of composer Edward Naylor (1867-1934) and classical scholar Henry Darnley Naylor (1872-1945). Died while traveling to Australia, and was buried at sea, between Teneriffe and the Cape, on May 15, 1897.
