John Hill Hewitt (1801-1890) was an American composer, songwriter, playwright, and poet. Born in New York City, moved to Augusta, Georgia in 1823. He became enamored of the South and was best known for his songs about the American South. A supporter of the Confederates during the Civil War, eventually settled in Baltimore, where he died in 1890. His oratorio Jephtha's Rash Vow (1845) was the first oratorio by an American-born composer.
