Jan Alberto Soggin (1926-2010) was an Italian scholar. Soggin graduated from the University of Rome and subsequently took his doctorate at the University of Basel. For some years he taught at Buenos Aires, Argentina, before returning to Rome as Professor of Old Testament at the Waldensian Theological Faculty, where he remained until his retirement. He was later appointed to the Chair at the University of Rome. He also held a part-time lecturership at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. He was a frequent visitor and lecturer at universities in the United Kingdom, United States and Israel. He was on the Editorial Board of Vetus Testamentum from 1975 to 1995, and a leading inspirer of, and contributor to, the Journal Henoch. In 2007 he became the first Italian scholar to receive the Burkitt Medal.
