James Bruce

James Bruce (1730-1794) was a Scottish traveler and author. Spent more a dozen years in North Africa and Ethiopia, to trace the origins of the Nile. In 1773 he brought back to Europe the first mss. of the “lost” Book of Enoch. One copy was presented to King Louis XV of France and ended in the Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris; a second was given to the Bodleian Library in Oxford; and the third and last was retained by Bruce for himself, being added to the Bodleian collections after his death in 1794.
