Iosif Davidovich Amusin (1910-1984) was a Jewish-Russian scholar. Hebraist, orientalist, historian, papyrologist, and specialist in Qumran Studies. The leading representative of the Russian school in ancient Near Eastern Studies during the Soviet period. Twice arrested and sentenced for Zionist connection (1928 and 1938), graduated in 1941 from the History Dept. of Leningrad University. After serving as medical officer in WW2, taught ancient history at Leningrad and Ulianovsk, frequently in trouble with the Communist authorities. Published numerous works on the Dead Sea Scrolls.
