Incarnation: Contemporary Writers on the New Testament (1990) is a nonfiction volume edited by Alfred Corn.

Abstract

"Twenty-three contemporary writers comment brilliantly on all the books of the New Testament and how it affected their lives and works."--Publisher description.

"This is an edited volume on the Incarnation by twenty-three award-winning novelists and poets from John Updike to Fredrick Buechner to Marilynne Robinson. The contributors are not trained specialist in history, biblical studies, or theology, per say, and some are not practicing Christians or theists, but each one takes a hand at reflecting on a particular book from the New Testament and considers how it might inform contemporary imaginative writing. Many contributors artfully interweave reflections on their assigned book from the New Testament with their personal experience with the church, or the Christian religion more broadly. Although it is not explicitly stated, the work ostensibly bears the title, Incarnation, because a tacit assumption of the editor pervades the entire book—the doctrine of the Incarnation permeates the entire corpus of the New Testament ... That being said, some of the contributors critically reflect upon the assumption that every book of the New Testament is imbued with contemporary theological doctrines. Dillard, for instance, challenges the view that Luke conceived of Jesus as divine, pre-existent, and co-substantial with the Father, and stresses instead, Luke's monotheism. Likewise, Price illumines the radical nature of John's statements about Jesus and stresses how unlikely it is that a sane non-Christian would assent to John's assertion that Jesus was God incarnate."--Deborah Forger, University of Michigan
