Biography

Memoirs: Year of the Dragon

“Does it make sense,” Papa asks Ilse, “that the world is different when there is a war? That until you were 10, you were just a normal child who lived with loving parents and went to school each day, and then suddenly all that stopped and now we have to live to survive …”

This is Ilse’s story. Its a story about needing to escape, and having no where else to go. Its a story about children who have to start new lives as if they were children. Its a story that takes you from Vienna to Shanghai to Sydney, from the lowest lows to the highest high and its a story about bravery and love and humanity … and dragons!

Based on the testimony of Ilse Charny.
