Herodes a Herodias <Slovak> / Herod and Herodias (1909) is a play by Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav.

Abstract

This verse drama, a masterpiece of the Realist era inspired by the biblical story, impressed with its Shakespearean form and a score of dramatic characters, a mosaic of distinct human destinies, political connections and twists of the plot. Regarded as the best attempt at Slovak drama before 1918, it has become a pillar of Slovak classic dramatic repertory. It was staged for the first time only after Hviezdoslav's death, in 1925. On 28 May 1955, it was the first premiere of the new P. O. Hviezdoslav Theatre. The play has been staged by acclaimed Slovak theatre director Janko Borodáč and more recently, Miloš Pietor and Roman Polák.
