Biography

Gyorgy "Georges" Amsel was born May 7, 1933 in Budapest, Hungary to Hugo Amsel and Sara (Seri) Fried. He was among the Jewish refugeee who from Hungary reached Switzerland aboard the Kastner Train in Dec. 1944 with his parents, after spending some months in Bergen-Belsen. He undertook high-school studies in Geneva and then in Paris, continuing on in the Physics Laboratory of Ecole Normale Supérieure to obtain his doctorate in nuclear physics in 1963. He became the Director of Research at the French National Centre for Scientific Research.He died in Paris, France, on March 11, 2017.
